Howard Lederer is currently one of the most well-known American players in the game of Poker. He is also known as the Professor due to his disposition and analytical approach to the game. He is the brother of Annie Duke, one of the best professional female players in the game.
Howard Lederer was born in Concord, New Hampshire to Rhoda and Richard Lederer.
Howard’s initial interest was primarily in chess and his passion for the game led him to New York where he joined chess clubs, like the Marshall Chess Club and the Manhattan Chess Club to continue playing and evolving in his game. It was in one of these clubs that he discovered poker and steadily grew to love it.
The Mayfair Club in New York was a renowned bridge and backgammon club, which Lederer soon became a part of. He, along with other world-class players gathered in this club to play Hold-‘Em poker when it was first introduced in New York. It was here that Lederer learnt the most valuable lessons of the game and became part of a circle of other great players, like Steve Zolotow, Erik Seidel and Dan Harrington.
Howard moved to Las Vegas in 1993 to pursue poker professionally. He made most of his money at first through cash games until 2002. His skills and expertise in the game continued to evolve and he went on to win two Hall of Fame titles. The first one was for the $2500 No-Limit Deuce to 7 Draw even that he won at the ’94 Hall of Poker Classic. The second title was picked up a year later, in 1995 when he won the same event.
As of 2010, his total live tournament winnings are more than $5,500,000.
