Dan Harrington is considered to be one of the best No Limit Hold’em tournament players of all time. His reputation as a conservative player has earned him the ironic nickname “Action Dan”
He won the World Series of Poker Main Event in 1995 and a million dollar payday. He has also won a World Poker Tour Championship for $1.5 million.
Dan Harrington was born December 6th, 1945 in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
He has played games his entire life and is a former backgammon champion and a U.S. Chess Master.
He played backgammon at the Mayfair Club in the 1980s. At that time, the Club had started running poker games also. This would be the training ground for many greats including Erik Seidel, Howard Lederer and Steve Zolotow.
Despite his remarkable success on the felt, he remains a part-time poker player. He owns and operates an investment company in California.
Dan Harrington is one of the greatest tournament players of all time. He has made the World Series of Poker Main Event Final Table four times, winning it once.
He first appeared on the tournament scene with a 6th place finish in the WSOP Main Event in 1987. That year Johnny Chan would win the Main Event.
Action Dan created a reputation for himself as a world class poker player in 1995 when he won the WSOP Main Event for $1 million. He would top the 1995 Money List winning the $2,500 WSOP No Limit Hold’em Event, the Four Queen’s Poker Classic and the Festival of Poker bringing his total winnings for the year to $1.5 million.
He would create WSOP history when he made back-to-back final table appearances in 2003 and 2004. He finished in 3rd in 2003 out of a field of 839 players and in 4th place in 2004 out of 2,576 players.
He won the World Poker Tour No Limit Hold’em Championship Event in 2007 and more than $1.5 million for the victory.
He established himself as one of the top theorists of the game when he authored the Harrington on Hold’em series of poker books. This series is considered essential reading for all tournament players.
He has lifetime tournaments winnings totaling $7 million.
