Avoiding distractions online

Published on February 23, 2010 by Ladbrokes_Poker   ·   No Comments

One of the great things about online poker is you can sit in your favourite chair, in the comfort of your own home and you do not even have to get dressed if you do not want to. There is no travelling to the casino, no temptation of the casino table games and no extra costs incurred through buying over-priced food and drink or the tipping of dealers.

However, all is not golden as playing from home means you are around many potential distractions that can hurt your bottom-line if you are not careful and do not continue to avoid them every time you log onto the poker client.

One of the best free poker tutorials I discovered on the internet highlighted some of the ways that you can limit the number of distractions you face when playing online. One of the first on the list was the advice to have a computer dedicated poker and only poker. This means once you have down loaded your desired poker client you should un-install everything not poker related so internet browsers and instant messenger services all need to hit the recycle bin.

You should also place your poker PC or laptop in an area of your house that is low traffic, such as the spare bedroom or an office if you have one. This will minimise the chances of someone walking in and distracting you or you being distracted by people walking past or into the room to make conversation. It is also less likely that one of these out of the way rooms will have TV’s and the like in, another major distraction for the online grinder.

Finally, the largest distraction you will face is actually right there in front of you at the poker table and that is the chat box. Whilst it can be humorous to follow an argument on there, even if you do not get involved yourself, when doing so you are not concentrating on the action and as a result will find it difficult to notice timing tells and other giveaways at the table. The other danger is you start typing in the chat box and give away some information that would otherwise have remained undiscovered.

It is hard enough to win at poker, particularly online, without hindering yourself by becoming enthralled by goings on around you.
