Calling Station

What is a Calling Station?

A calling station is simply a player who calls a lot. The saying is often meant in a derogatory way but being a calling station can be a good thing and a bad thing according to most betfair poker tips.

Bad Thing

There are some opponents who fall into the category of calling station because they are simply poor players – or more accurately they make poor decisions.

These type of players are like gold dust because they will call your bets for three streets with any piece of the board or a pocket pair. They simply do not believe you have a hand or believe that there hand is often best. They also find themselves in dominated positions more often than good players. A good example of a dominated position is when you are holding AKo and your opponent is holding KTo and the flop is Kxxxx. On these types of boards these calling stations may even lose their entire stack.

One word of caution for those using the betfair welcome bonus against a calling station is to tone down your semi bluffing and barrelling frequencies. If they are not going to fold then what is the point pretending you can force them to?

Good Thing

You can also be described as a calling station in a positive sense. Phil Galfond, one of the worlds top online professional cash game specialists is a self confessed calling station. If you have a good sound game, and are taking your time to think long and hard before each decision, then you will start to see spots where a call will be more profitable than a fold or even a raise.

Keep your eyes peeled for board textures that your opponent would normally use for semi bluffing. Would he really bet in that spot or would he check back for pot control?

Look for these spots and don’t be afraid to call.
