Most players know how to quickly identify the best starting hands in Texas Hold ‘Em Poker, but not everybody knows how to recognize bad hands at once.
By studying the list of bad starting hands, you’ll be better prepared to know whether to proceed or not with playing if you happen to be dealt any of them. Knowing when to fold is also an important skill in poker. There’s nothing worse than proceeding with a bad hand and losing more money along the way.
This is one of the worst hands in Texas Hold ‘Em and is also known as the ‘hammer’. Since there are 4 cards between the 2 and 7, it is impossible to make a straight, and even if you try to make a flush if your cards are suited, it will be a very low value hand. If you’re dealt a 2-7, know that it is wiser to fold at once than try to keep playing.
Just like the 2-7 it is not possible to make a straight with a 2-8. And even though the 8 is higher than a 7, it is still a weak hand when trying to hit a suit or flush.
The only reason this hand could possibly beat a 2-8 or 2-7 is because of the 3. But with a 3-8 or 3-7, it is still impossible to make a flush or straight.
This hand will only work for you if the flop deals a 3-4-5 so that you can hit a straight. Unfortunately, it’s very likely that somebody else will have the 6-7 and be able to hit a higher straight. The same is true for a flush; if you make one, chances are somebody else will hit a higher one.
Since this hand contains a 9, it is marginally stronger than the other hands listed above. If you get a pair of 9s, you have a middle pair which is better than a low pair but can still be easily knocked out by a pair of jacks, queens, kings or aces. It may be easy for you to keep playing hoping that you can beat out a table of low hands. Keep in mind though that making a straight is impossible here too.
When dealt any of these cards, it’s always a better option to fold. These hands will rarely win.
Face/Ace card+Low card
Once you’ve been dealt your two hole cards, it’s common for some players to get excited about holding an ace, king, queen or jack even when the second card is a low card. These hands have the ability to gather a few low winnings but eventually you can very easily be outed by a player with a higher kicker.
