Texas Hold’em Sit and go Strategies

Best Sit and go strategies

Sit and go’s are great way to make some extra money playing poker. Low limit sit n go players are generally poor and there is a good opportunity for a learning or somewhat experienced player to increase their winnings. The skill level of players at sit n go’s varies widely depending on the limit. Middle and high limit sit n go’s can be very difficult when compared to the smaller $5 or $10 variety. Whatever limit you choose, with enough time and practice anyone can become a successful and profitable sit n go player.

Getting in the money

Sit n go’s are really quite simple:

Usually ten players buy in and battle it out for the prize pool. In general the top three finishers are paid, but there are multi table sit n go’s where more positions are paid and there are six person sit n go’s where only the top two players are paid. While finishing in first is always the best idea, it is important to focus on at least finishing in one of the money paying positions!

With this in mind it is vital that you take an aggressive approach from the beginning of the tournament. Not only will this help build your stack faster, it simply will increase your chances of finishing in the money. Also, aggressive play is simply the best way to play poker. You keep opponents guessing, on edge and let them know that they can never relax when you are in the hand.

Here are few strategies to keep in mind during the early stage of a sit n go:

  • Playing premium hands is best, but you don’t have to wait around for them, after all, sit and go’s can be quite short and premium hands may never bless your grip.
  • Use the early rounds to play AX suited, suited connectors, connectors and other hands that can win big money for little up front investment. In the beginning these hands are generally more profitable because you can sometimes sneak into the pot for very little money. As the tournament field thins and the better players are left, it is unlikely that you will be able to play a hand like this profitably.
  • Use your stack to push around players who get in trouble early. While it is not a written rule, several times in sit n go’s someone always makes a dumb move or gets unlucky early. Use your chips to punish these unfortunate players.
  • Bet your hands aggressively, especially your premium ones. Don’t fool around with great hands. Get your chips in the pot and make the most of it.

The SNG Endstage

This is where sit n go tournaments get interesting. Fortunes can turn in an instant as the field thins and the blinds increase. Your play needs to change and adapt as the cost to enter a pot grows and the competition gets better. Multi-way hands that were playable early on now become harder to play and you will need to focus on hands that can make winning pairs or other powerful threats. While you will certainly hit some straights, flushes or full houses in the final rounds of a sit n go, you need to understand that these hands no longer should be what you are seeing at the beginning of a hand. The cost to draw to these hands is just too great considering the price of the pot in the later rounds. By continuing to play aggressive in the final rounds you will make the most out of questionable hands like K9 offsuit or other hands that include a high face card.
