Freerolls world: Little tip for beginners

Published on December 2, 2010 by kkroz   ·   No Comments

If you’ve a decent experience in the poker world, which means that you have already played regular events with real money buy-ins and not only played for fun or in freerolls, you will be astonished by people’s playing behaviour in freerolls, trust me. Since nobody has any real cash invested, the players have nothing to lose in these kind of events and don’t mind playing very loose, (also if they don’t know what that means), so they can push all in with all the possible random hands.

Freerolls: Random players

So, if you are a poker player, forget to play in freerolls, it’s difficult to find players that play poker instead to push only every second.
If you want to play you can obviously think about this behaviour and use it as advantage in your strategy, but it’s not always so easy.  If you’re just a little bit more selective than the majority of the freeroll players when it’s time to select your starting hands, you will be obviously favourite most of the time before the Flop, but after that, only luck can save you and when some random players hit a Full House starting with 7-2 you’ll have all the reason to become crazy. I guess most of the players had this bad experience plenty of times, but when you have decided to play freerolls tournament, you have to know what to expect from your opponents.
So, playing at these tables could be good if you think that you have nothing to lose, but it could be also a pain in the ass if you think to play proper poker. If you take the decision to play like you’d do in a regular event, you’ll quickly understand that most of the players are building their huge stacks playing random loose poker. Soon you will come to the decision of play a wide range of hands and not only good hands, at that point you have to wait until luck will sit by your side. The only opportunity to have a good stack in the final stages of the freerolls is to take many risks, the key factor is to be more selective than the random players around, but begin building your stack as soon as you can.
If you are a beginner you can play as you want, pushing all-in or waiting for good hands, but if you are a decent player this is not your world. A good tip is to change your mind and prove your skills at normal tables.
