Donk Leading – Paired Boards

Published on December 30, 2010 by Ladbrokes_Poker   ·   No Comments

The phrase Donk Leading is a reference used to describe an action when someone leads into a raiser with a bet post flop. When someone’s takes this line in a poker game it is viewed by most experienced players as unusual. The normal flow of action would be for the person out of position to check the action to the pre flop raiser – the player with the initiative.

Those over at www.betfairpoker.com agree that making your opponent think is a good thing. Donk leading into the pre flop raiser will make him think because the play is unusual. The pre flop raiser is expecting you to check to him so why live up to his expectations?

So when can you profitably donk lead? As usual it depends on board texture and your opponent’s tendencies although there is one area that seems to be profitable irrespective of player tendencies and that is on paired boards.

You are in the small blind in a $1/2, 6 max cash game and the button limps into the pot for $2 and you call in the small blind with a random hand and the big blind checks. The board is paired, lets say 5h5d9c. This is a fantastic board to donk lead into. The big blind will be worried about the opponent sat waiting in the button – and the button will see you donk leading into two opponents and see this as a sign of strength. This situation will provide you with a long term profit.

On the occasions that you get a caller while using the betfair bonus code you should then fire any card on the turn. You will receive a surprising number of folds that far outweigh the times that you get called and have to surrender your bluff on the river.
