The History of the World Series of Poker

Published on August 15, 2010 by admin   ·   No Comments

We’ve all heard about this great tournament of poker events. But how did it all come about?

The story of the beginning of the World Series of Poker begins in 1970 in Las Vegas at the Horseshoe Casino in downtown Las Vegas. Benny Binion, the owner of the Horseshoe had an idea to invite the best known poker players to play out a series of games in his casino in front of an audience. Among them were Doyle Brunson, Johnny Moss,  Amarillo Slim Preston, Brian Roberts, Puggy Pearson, Crandall Addington, and Carl Cannon.

This first World Series of Poker Event included several sets of games like five-card stud, deuce to seven low-ball draw, seven-card stud, Texas Hold ‘Em and Razz. After the series was over, each player had to vote to decide who would be the first World Champion. Johnny Moss was unanimously chosen, and was awarded a silver cup.

In 1971, Johnny Moss won once again when the World Series was a freeze-out winner-take-all tournament. In the years that followed, rules were changed to include more than just one winner. The players who finished in the top few positions would receive a share of the prize money, albeit in different percentages. This was known as a ‘shared-purse’ tournament.

At first, the event could only be attended by persons with enough money to register. Anyone could register, but they had to have the $10,000 for the initial enrollment. A lot of players did enroll but it was only when ‘satellite’ tournaments were introduced, did the number of interested players really begin to flood in.

A ‘satellite’ is a game or tournament with a low buy-in rate, which allows the winner(s) to enter into a higher buy-in game or tournament. Instead of a player having to shell out the entire high amount for entry into the main event, he/she can participate in several low buy-in rate games and subsequently, win a seat at the main event as the prize. Once the satellite tournaments were introduced, the number of participants for the World Series of Poker increased significantly. By the year 2000, there were about 4780 players total and went up enormously to 23,000 players in 2005.

The World Series of Poker had since been held in the Horseshoe Casino till 2004 when Harrah’s purchased the hotel and with it, the rights to the series…
